Instructions to Authors

The Orthopaedic Journal at Harvard Medical School

Content

Submissions should take the form of an organized review/update of academic activities.  This format will provide the opportunity to present data, summarize background information and discuss recent developments in the field, rather than simply reprint abstracts of recent work.  It will also allow a summary of multiple areas of research under a single theme.  The language can be relatively informal, but should approximate that seen in peer-reviewed journals.  Please note The Orthopaedic Journal is not a peer-reviewed publication.

Length

Each contributor or research group will be allotted approximately 4 pages of space in The Orthopaedic Journal.  This is the equivalent of approximately 12 pages of double spaced, size 12 font, typewritten text including figure legends and references.  If more space is needed, it will be granted on an individual basis by the editorial staff.

Data

Care must be taken so that citation of unpublished data in the Orthopaedic Journal at Harvard Medical School does not compromise the ability to publish the work in full in a peer-reviewed journal. Unpublished original investigations should be referred to in general terms (e.g. trends, fractions, or percentages) so that future publication of the study in a peer-reviewed review is not compromised. Mention of unpublished studies in The Orthopaedic Journal is meant to inform the readership of current research activities and interests of Harvard faculty. Citation in this manner represents a type of press release and as such does not constitute dual publication according to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (NEJM 336:309-315, Jan 23, 1997).

Figures and Tables

Illustrations must be submitted as SEPARATE files in JPG, TIFF, or BMP format suitable for publication. Line artwork should have a minimum resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi). Grayscale and color figures should have a minimum resolution of 400 dpi. A higher resolution for figures is preferred.

Style

The style of the manuscript and bibliography should follow the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (NEJM 336:309-315, Jan 23, 1997).
