1930's

At the age of 93, Carter R. Rowe '39, writes that he continues to enjoy news from the Harvard Combined Residency Program. Retired in Fredericksburg, VA since 1992, he continues to summer in Peterborough, NH and can occa-sionally be seen during his visits to the MGH.

1940's

Marshall R. Urist '46 continues his research in the use of bone morphogenic protein in the treatment of long bone non-unions at the UCLA Bone Research Laboratory in Los Angeles, CA.

Arthur R. Hartwig '49 retired as Associate Clinical Professor at UC-San Francisco in 1978 and continues to reside in the Bay Area.

1950's

Mack L. Clayton '51 was recently named Distinguished Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, 2000, and Pioneer in Hand Surgery by the IFSSH, 1998.

Robert E. Funsch ‘51, retired since 1986, writes asking for the whereabouts of all orthopaedic house staff from 1948- 52. He can be reached at his home, 7221 Greenway Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63130.

Dean and Professor Emeritus at Tufts University, Henry H. Banks '53 is now retired and resides in Boston.

"Nice work on the Review," writes James F. Donovan '57," adding that forming a Harvard Orthopaedic Alumni Association "was a long time coming!" He is retired and cur-rently resides in Kennebunk, ME.

1960's

Retired since December 1999, Joseph H. Dimon III '60, writes that he continues to pursue his interests in tennis and the electric bass in addition to his annual volunteer work at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer of Haiti.

Benjamin E. Bierbaum '67 currently practices at the New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, with interests in bear-ing surfaces and wear in total joint arthroplasty as well as genetic bases of hip disease.

1970's

Marc A. Asher '70 was recently named Kansas University Medical School Alumnus of the Year, 1999.

Roger N. Williams '71 continues to pursue his interests in joint replacement, arthroscopy, and osteoporosis in Naples, FL and reports that he recently sailed "from my yard to Cuba" in December 1998.

Recently a visiting professor to Children's Hospital, John. A. (Tony) Herring '73 has managed to produce a film on the polio era in addition to pursuing his research interest in Legg-Perthes disease.

Angelo James Lopano '73 currently is Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics and Program Director of Orthopaedic Residency at the Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, NJ.

Pursuing his interests in outcomes research, carpal tunnel syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis, Barry P. Simmons '73 continues to serve as Chief of the Hand/Upper Extremity Service at BWH.

Citing interests in intraoperative EMG studies of spinal musculature, Stanley L. Grabias '74 practices in the field of complex spine reconstructive surgery in Reading, PA.

James P. Tasto '74 served as president of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, 1999-2000.

"I enjoy doing general orthopaedic surgery in a rural set-ting," writes M. Clay Vaughan ‘74, who receives "lots of thank you letters from patients who really appreciate quality orthopaedic care." He adds that his son James will matriculate from Duke Law School this year, daughter Alison graduated from Dartmouth College in 1998 and now works for McKinsey Consulting, and daughter Lisa currently attends Marlboro College.

Robert H. Arbuckle '76 continues in general orthopaedics in Gilford, NH and remains the team physician for two high school football teams for more than 20 years. He was diagnosed with prostate carcinoma at age 51; believing that work with PMMA cement may be relevant to this condition, he writes ask-ing input from other Harvard alumni on this subject.

Carl D. Fackler '76 works in the area of scoliosis and pediatric orthopaedics in Atlanta, GA.

Neil J. Barkin '77 currently works in general orthopaedics in Rockville, MD and notes that he is looking to add one or two additional surgeons to his group.

Despite working every other night and weekend, Frederick L. Jones '77 reports that the future is bright in his practice in Huntingdon, PA.

Stephen J. Lipson '77 currently serves as Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA.

Robert M. Averill '78 continues to practice in San Diego, CA. His practice is limited to total hip and knee arthroplasty.

Roger W. Hood '79 continues to work in the field of hip and knee arthroplasty in Overland Park, KS.

Jesse B. Jupiter '79 is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Hand Surgery at MGH. He continues to be actively involved in resident education and research.

Victor Tseng '79 is practicing in the upper extremity surgery in Phoenix, AZ.

1980's

Richard E. McCarthy '80 practices in spinal surgery in adults and children and continues to be involved with the Scoliosis Research Society. He currently lives in Little Rock, AR and has 7 children.

In addition to his clinical practice in Hollywood, FL, Richard E. Strain '80 has made his mark on the world wide web, founding www.rocket-sci.com and www.h-ortho.com.

Stephen B. Trippel '80 continues his clinical practice and basic science research in the Department of Orthopaedics at MGH.

After serving as president of the American Association of Tissue Banks from 1997-99, Michael J. Joyce '81 continues his practice in orthopaedic oncology, traumatology, and joint arthroplasty at the Cleveland Clinic.

Richard F. Santore '81 currently works as Clinical Professor and Division Chief of Adult Reconstruction at UC-San Diego and recently served as 1999 president of the Western Orthopaedic Association. He continues to pursue his interests in osteotomies, performing greater than 100 such cases per year. In April 2000 he plans to take time out of his busy academic practice to travel to Fiji.

John T. Stinson '81 practices almost exclusively in spinal disorders as part of a six-person practice in Rockville, MD.

J. Philip Maloney '82 works in arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine in Visalia, CA

Interested in alternative bearing surfaces in total joint arthroplasty, Ira Posner ‘82 practices in Hollywood, FL and currently serves as one of 20 investigators for Encore Orthopaedics, studying ceramic-ceramic hip replacements. Ira writes, "I hope that these devices will solve the wear problem, particularly for my younger patients."

Sumner Karas '84 practices in shoulder and elbow surgery in Springfield, MA

After completing her fellowship training in trauma and pediatric orthopaedics with Drs. Joseph Schatzker and Cloin Moseley, respectively, Deborah Faith (Pozin) Stanitski '85 continues to pursue her interests in limb lengthening and reconstruction, spinal deformity, and skeletal dysplasias at the Medical University of South Carolina. She reports that despite sustaining a closed head injury in March 1999, she continues to pursue both her music and horseback riding interests.

With interests in adult hip and knee reconstruction, Daniel J. Berry '86 continues to practice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Waldo E. Floyd III '86 reports though he is "busy practicing hand surgery and raising teenagers, all is well."

Robert J. Krushell '87 reports that his practice is devot-ed to hip and knee arthroplasty as part of an 11 surgeon orthopaedic practice in Springfield, MA. He lives with his wife and 2 children in Western Massachusetts.

"I currently have a wonderful sports and general orthopaedic practice in Clear Lake, Texas," writes Kenneth R. First '88. "My wife Gina just gave birth to my daughter Angela and my step-son Joseph is in his sophomore year."

Brian A. Shaw recently returned from a fishing trip in the Kodiak with former alumni Peter Waters, Rich Rowe, and Don Roberts. In addition to caring for his wife Lisa, 4 children, 4 dogs, 6 horses, a goldfish, and a tortoise, he serves as Director of the Divisionof Orthopaedic Surgery, Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, CA.

1990's

Martin Boublik '91 currently works at the Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic in Englewood, CO.

Brian D. Snyder '92 currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Boston's Children's Hospital and Interim Director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He continues to pursue his research interests in the areas of skeletal biomechanics and the prediction of fracture in the setting of skeletal metastasis.

Robert M. Bernstein '93 is Assistant Chief of Staff Shriner's Hospital in Los Angeles, CA.

Citing an interest in alpine sports medicine, John V. Foley '93 currently works in Truckee, CA.

David Coran '95 currently practices in spinal surgery and pediatric orthopaedics in Milwaukee, WI.

In keeping with his interest in sports medicine after com-pleting a fellowship at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic, D. Peter Van Eenenaam '95 serves as travelling physician for the U.S. Women's Alpine World Cup Ski Team. He currently practices in Watertown, NY where he lives with his wife Dacia and children David Peter Jr. and Sarah.

After completing a spine fellowship with Dr. Frank Eismont at the University of Miami, Daveed Frazier '95 moved to New York where he is interested in all aspects of adult and pediatric spine care.

Douglas K. Ayres '96 recently moved from Boston to Williamsburg, VA with his wife Heather, joining a four person private practice group in general orthopaedics and joint recon-struction. He is enjoying the "beautiful weather and country-side for year-round outdoor activities."

After completing his sports fellowship with Dr. John Richmond at New England Medical Center, Craig M. Mintzer '96 has moved on to Winter Park, FL, where he currently serves as team physician to the Orlando Magic, Orlando Miracle, and the IHL Orlando Solar Bears, in addition to the University of Central Florida and Rollins College.

After obtaining his Ph.D. in 1999, Peter Kloen '97 returned to The Netherlands and currently serves as attending physician at Olvg Hospital in Amsterdam. He will return to the United States to do a trauma fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in August, 2000.

Mininder S. Kocher '98 will complete his fellowship training in at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic this summer and go on to work as AAOS/OREF Health Services Research Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health this fall. He reports two recent additions to his family, Sophia Dupre, born August 1998 and Isabelle Dupre, born December 1999.

Former Fellows

After completing his sports fellowship with Dr. Bertram Zarins at MGH in 1990, Drew V. Miller has taken his interest in sports medicine to Atlanta, where he currently serves team physician for Georgia Tech Athletics.

Mark Bernhardt, a former Spine Fellow with Dr. Augustus White at the Beth Israel Hospital, writes that the previous Gus White Spine Fellows Reunions of 1990 and 1996 were very suc-cessful. He invites all interested parties to the next Gus White Spine Fellowship Reunion on October 14, 2000, to be held at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center following the Harvard Medical School CME Course "Low Back Pain and Sciatica."
