1940'S

William N. Jones M.D.
has been totally retired from orthopaedic practice since Jan, 2000. He is currently living and well, aged 85. He is still happily married to Rosalind Loutrel since 1955.
 

1950'S

Mack L. Clayton M.D. '51
is retired and the Mack L. Clayton, M.D. Chair of Orthopaedics, University of Colorado Medical School was named in his honor.

John Hall M.D. '52
is semi-retired and enjoying a lot of traveling, most recently to South America.>/p>

John R. Huckell M.D. '58
spoke at Harvard Combined Grand Rounds in June 2003.

Robert E. Key M.D. '58
is retired from active practice, since July 1996. He works one day a week at the Veteran's Hospital doing pension and comp exams. He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary, April 2003. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and golfing.
 

1960'S

Joseph H. Dimon III M.D. '60
is retired, volunteers for "office orthopedics" at Good Samaritan Clinic in Atlanta. He enjoys playing tennis and playing electric bass guitar in the band "Unmanaged Care".

William H. Simon M.D. '68
has published a new book "Conquering Chronic Pain after Injury" Simon, W.H., Ehrlich, G.E., & Sadwin, A. Avery Publishers, NY 2002.

William H. Thomas '67
On June 6th his first granddaughter, Melanie, was born to his daughter, Susan Macleod, who is living in Brooklyn, NY. His grandsons, Eddie and Thomas Williams, and his daughter, Annie, go to Florida any chance they get. He sees lots of old Harvard Orthopedic friends: Bob Boyd, Fred Ewald, Jim Huddleston, Dick Scott, Art Boland, Bob Poss, Clem Sledge, Greg Brick, and Tom Thornhill. He misses the association with colleagues. He's doing some flying, fishing, and occasional golf.
 

1970'S

Marc Asher M.D. '70
was promoted to University of Kansas Distinguished Professor in July 2003. In October-November he was treated for papillary thryoid cancer stage III. Outside of being hoarse, his is fine and told us that his "outlook is promising." He continues with academic work including preparation of the Harrington Spine Symposium July 28-30, 2005, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Dr. Paul Harrington's passing.

Philip Bernstein M.D.'71
is still busy with predominantly a joint replacement practice, and he is now in his 32nd year of practice! Both his daughter, Dana, and son, Alex, are attorneys leaving him wondering what he did wrong. He has quit squash and is playing golf. He still sees Morrie Susman and Howard Schwartz and they reminisce about residency days!

Stephen G. Brown M.D. '78
continues to be involved is an active surgical practice and an active medico/legal practice. He is the CEO and founder 4U Nutraceuticals. He is the medical director and medical consultant for Biomet and Forever Lung Inc. His publications include a book titled, "Complex Medicine, Simple Wisdom". He has three grown children, 2 two of which are married with three grandchildren. His hobbies include exercise, furniture making, and motorcycles.

John H. Chaglassian M.D. '74
is in private practice in Arlington, MA and operates at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He enjoys his Harvard and MGH appointments and makes his best effort to attend the Grand Rounds. Each year he travels to Los Angeles and spends Christmas and New Year's with extended family on the West Coast. He also enjoys the specialty meetings in different locations, which gives him an opportunity to see new places. He has three children. Ann finished law school at the American University in Washington, DC and passed the Massachusetts Bar exam. Alain is pre-med at Harvard. Edward graduated from Georgetown College, Wash, DC and is employed by JBG Enterprises.

Michael J. Goldberg M.D. '70
is the recipient of both the 2003 Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the 2003 Marion Ropes Recognition Award from the Arthritis Foundation. He is also Chairman of the Board for The Home for Little Wanderers, the nations oldest and one of the largest child welfare agencies.

Edward A. Heyes M.D. '73
has five children, all married, and he currently has nine grandchildren. He is retired but continues to volunteer in orthopedics and the Church Missionary Administration.

George E. Lewinnek M.D. '76
reports his oldest daughter started medical school this fall, showing a lack of business sense that runs in the family, and making him very proud.

Robert W. Lipke M.D. (Hand Fellow '77-'78)
is now retired from practice. His daughter, Rebecca, graduated from Princeton University in 2003 and will attend Penn State Medical School.

Stephen J. Lipson M.D. '77
became the Orthopaedic consultant to the Harvard Medical School Integrated Care Clinic of the Brigham and Women's Hospital in September, 2003.

Michael B. Millis M.D. '75
is Chief, Adolescent/Young Adult Hip Unit, Children's Hospital, Boston.

H. Gary Parker M.D. '74
continues as director of Maine Center of Coaching Education at the University of Maine, despite retirement from active practice in November 2002. He received the Robert J. Lahey Sports Medicine Award 02-03 from the University of Maine.

Richard St. Onge M.D. '75
is now living and practicing in Logan, Utah with Alpine Orthopaedic Specialists (an 8 man group). He is the hand specialist with the practice and they cover Utah State University athletics. He has decreased his mountain climbing significantly and he and his wife are raising and racing Alaskan Husky Sled dogs. They are very busy throughout the year with this sport. Their two sons are married and they have one granddaughter. Richard Anton is living in Oahu, HI and finishing his Ph.D and Joseph Clark is living in Sun Valley, Idaho as a mountain guide.

Charles M. Smith M.D. '70
is a Trustee of Guield Academy. His daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Smith, married John Henry Trimmer III on Jan 31, 2003 in Cancun, Mexico and lives in Hilleborough, CA. Daughter, Barbara and he traveled to Egypt and Jordan before 9/11, which has stimulated reading about the Central Asia & Middle East since.

Robert Steele M.D. '71
retired from practice December 2002. He has three grandchildren.

Morris H. Susman M.D. '73
reports that his only practice location for 29 years, the Denver Orthopedic Clinic, founded by Mack L. Clayton, MD, closed its doors on September 1, 2003 after 50 years of delivering superior orthopedic care to thousands of patients. This is, in large part, a testimony to the economic state of the practice of medicine today. He is now working with his former partner, Doug Dennis, at Colorado Joint Replacement.

Bertram Zarins M.D. '72
reports his wife, Laima, finished medical school in May 2002, and is currently a resident in Internal Medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital. Theirs sons, ages 11 and 13, are at Park School in Brookline.
 

1980'S

James E. Carpenter M.D. '89
was named Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan in October 2003.

Edward Diao M.D. '86
is currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurosurgery at University of California, San Francisco. As Chief of the Hand Surgery Division, he is active in medical student, resident, and fellow education. His laboratory is funded through the NIH and does upper extremity basic science research. He is an active publication editor, course director and lecturer for AAOS, ORS, and ASSH sponsored meetings, most recently the chair for AAOS/ASSH Specialty Day. He and his wife, Theresa, have three children: Catherine, age 15, is a 9th grader at Phillips Exeter Academy; Julia, age 14, is in 8th grade; and Conrad, age 6, is in first grade in San Francisco. They continue to enjoy an active lifestyle in San Francisco, with an emphasis on tennis, skiing, conditioning, and the kids' activities.

Kenneth R. First M.D. '88
will be joined by a new associate, Dr. Shawn Holt, in August. He has become an avid believer in extracorporeal shock therapy for tendon pathology with Sonocur. His interest in golf has led him to the great courses of Ireland and Scotland. He shot 79 at Turnberry and an 80 on the Old Course at St. Andrews. He is also proud of his stepson, Joseph, who is playing varsity ice hockey at the University of Delaware. Daughter Angela (age 4) is playing Barbie, but son Jeff (age 2) can actually throw a spiral over 10 yards!

Waldo Floyd III M.D. '85
is proud to announce he married Cayre Curry on July 19, 2003. He is Secretary Treasurer of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society.

Hill Hastings M.D. '80
and Bettie continue to travel, ride horses, train and show their Portuguese water dogs. They live in Indianapolis and continue to come and go from Telluride, Colorado .Their older daughter, Reiper (age 24) moved home from teaching in China and now attends Seattle Graduate School in organizational psychology. Their younger daughter, Laurel, a junior at Colorado College, is spending the semester abroad in Florence, Italy.

Richard S. Idler M.D. '81
is currently Fellowship Director of the Indiana Hand Center. This past year, he received the Volunteer Service Award from the ASSH. He has completed Landmark Education Curriculum for Life, and recently received his black belt in Shorei Kai Karate. His daughter, Corinne, is now ten and his son, Kohl, is eight.

has been appointed Associate Dean of Research Development, Rush Medical College.

has been Chief of the Total Joint Replacement Service, U. Mass.- Memorial (Worcester), since April 2000.

is currently Director of Knee, Hip and Shoulder Center, Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Philip Maloney M.D. '82
is currently in a very busy Sports Medicine and workers' compensation solo practice in Visalia, CA. He would love to retire in 5 years, but will be difficult with daughter Brandy at Bowdoin and son Tim (age 16) in private school. He enjoyed a rendezvous with Kirk Johnson last summer. He and Gail have bought 2 acres in the Rockies in Northwestern Montana on a lake and are building a log cabin on the water this summer. They enjoy fly fishing, golf, hiking together. Ira Posner M.D. '81
has been retired since 2002 secondary to medical problems. He is currently doing peer review work for Broadspire. He has two daughters attending law school.

Richard D. Roux M.D. '88
recently added George Liu, M.D. '01 to his practice, Orthopaedics Norwest. Dr. Liu is a graduate of the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency. Daughter, Nikki (age 16) is a sophomore in high school, and a two year varsity starter in soccer. Her team has won league and regional titles two years in a row. She also starts in basketball. Christine (age 11) is in middle school and plays soccer and basketball. She recently represented her school in a statewide math competition where her team placed second. He and Michelle have been cruising the San Juan Islands, Puget Sound, and British Columbia coast whenever time allows the last several years. He also enjoys fly fishing for salmon and steelhead and have had some wonderful Alaska trips with Don Roberts, Brian Shaw and not too many years ago, Peter Waters ("We need to go again!")

Robert A. Schultz M.D. '83
is retiring from private practice on August 1st, 2004, and moving to Wakefield Plantation, Raleigh, NC to accept a part-time faculty position at Duke. He and his wife, Debbie, have three children: Eric (age 15) Stephanie (age 13) and Morgan (age 9).

makes yearly trips to South America to perform and instruct in pediatric orthopaedics.

Kevin Stone M.D. '86
reports his career as an orthopaedic surgeon has included clinical practice, non-profit research activities and for-profit research. He is currently in private practice, since 1988, at the Stone Clinic. He has been Chairman of Joint Juice, Inc. since 1999. Within the last year he received a Doctor of Humane Letters - Honoris Causa, Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, June 2003, for his philantrophic contributions to the community and had the honor of giving the commencement address. He is founding scientist, since 1996, of CrossCart, Inc, and Chairman and Founder, since 1996, of The Stone Foundation for Sports Medicine and Arthritis Research. His website is www.stoneclinic.com

is a founding member and Head of Shoulder Section of NESES (New England Shoulder and Elbow Society). The Society's inaugural meeting was held at Jay Peak, Vermont in February, 2004.

Douglas Kenneth Ayres M.D. '95
left private practice behind in Virginia to return to Boston. He joined on with Mark Gebhardt, MD at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he is reestablishing the joint reconstruction service. Doug's wife, Heather, is finishing up her doctorate at Harvard. Great to be back under the glow of Fenway Park!

Catherine M. Burns M.D. '96
has been married to Ken Apen since January 16, 1999. She is currently working for the Indian Health Service, Gallup, New Mexico. She enjoys hiking, mountain biking, inline skating (75 mile skate - Hawaii; 105km in Austria/Hungary), skiing, and snowboarding. Her travel since residency includes medically related trips to Guam, Saipan, Rota, Tinian, Philippines, Austria, Chuuk, Kasrae, Pohnpe and non-medical travel to Brazil, France, South Africa, Switzerland, Zimbabwe, Lesothe, Ghana.

Deryk G. Jones M.D. '96
is an Associate Professor at Tulane Medical School and is also the Tulane basketball and football team physician. He and his wife, Tina, have three children: Meshya (age 12), Cameryn (age 4), and Deryk (age 2).

Valerae Lewis M.D. '98
is proud to announce the birth of twin girls, Isabella and Olivia O'Reilly, on April 4, 2003. She is currently a 2004 AAOS Leadership Fellow.

Martha M. Murray M.D. '99
is on staff at Children's Hospital specializing in Sports medicine for the pediatric and adolescent population. She and Mike have two children, Joe (age 2), and Marie Rose (age 1).

Richard J. O'Donnell M.D. '94
is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Orthopedic Oncology Service at the University of California, San Francisco. He was married on November 28, 2003 to Ann Marie Gorczyca, DMD ('88), MPH ('88), MS, at St. Paul's Church in Cambridge.

Kevin D. Plancher M.D. '91
holds current positions as: Attending, Beth Israel Medical Center, Singer Division, NYC; Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY; Attending, Stamford Hospital, CT; Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine PLLC, NYC and Greenwich, CT. He is married with three children: Brian Kyle (age 13); Jamie Erin (age 10); Megan Elizabeth (age 4). He enjoys tennis, skiing, swimming, and music. He has proficiencies in guitar, trumpet and French.

Wm. Blake Rodgers M.D. '94
spent four months in the Army during Iraqi Freedom. He is Chief of Spine Surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and is currently President of the Association of Spinal Osteosynthesis Research Group (ARGOS). He has three children: Carly (age 10); Jyles (age 7); and Clarence (age 3).

Brett A. Taylor M.D. '97
received the 2003 OREF Zimmer Career Development Award and the 2004 Robert Wood Johnson Faculty Development Award. He has two sons: Aidan (age 3), and Liam (age 7 months).
